Venice Drum Circle Police Intervention

So I went to the Drum Circle tonight, and a police helicopter fewl above everyone, and the police told everyone they could stay, but had to stop drumming!

Is this new? Why are they doing this? Are they saying they get noise complaints?

Does anyone have any experience with petitioning? I'd be really interested in getting something going to save the drum circle.

But what would this petition have to say exactly?
We probably need to find out what law they are saying the drummers are violating. And get a petition to sanction the drum circle from whatever that may be?

I don't know how that works, any info would be helpful.

anyone belong to a local Community Garden?

I have been interested in joining a community garden in the area. Do any of you belong to one? There are quite a few out there, and it would be nice to get some input.

The closest one's to Venice are Santa Monica (near Main Street), Santa Monica Park, Ocean View Farms in Mar Vista and a few in Culver City as well. I found this list of them on line http://lagardencouncil.org/index.php?option=com_contxtd&catid=33&Itemid=42 along with a map of their locations http://www.lanlt.org/docs/LACGnewslttrMAP.pdf.

I'd like to know what anyone's experience with these community gardens are.

Thanks

I did a few of these tours back in Washington, D.C. when I lived there, and some of the homes and gardens featured were freaking amazing, as well as a great source of ideas for what to do to your own house or yard.

I'm moving to playa del rey... tips please.

I didn't see a Playa Del Rey tribe, if there is one please direct me there.
So I'm moving into my dream place near the beach . I think I am very close to venice. I need some new beach places to visit. Any chill kind of hipster bar that I should do go? A place that plays Devo, Madonna and James Brown would be great.( talking heads would be a dream)
Any cool little ( IE cheap ) cute dress/shoe places I should get out? Isn't Zanzibar right there in Venice.
Where can I get a cheap iced coffee and read the Onion? I don't mean to sound cheap but I live in Silverlake and the playa looks expensive.
I'm also looking for intelligent , interesting men near 30 years old ( but with their shit together ) where are they near the playa?

Tell me everything you wish you knew when you moved to Venice/Marina del rey/Playa del Rey. I'm also having a home warming party in july sometime, if you are cool and want to help decorate or just hang out please e-mail me. I'm looking for some fabulous women friends too.

Carnival?

What the hell was up with Carnival this year?

I had no idea when it was to happen because their wasn't a single flyer I saw or add (and I walk all over the place)! My friend called to ask if I wanted to go this weekend (the night of) and I was excited to go. She assumed it was in the same place that it always is so we went to the circle and nope...not there...we drove all over Venice and could'n't find it. Apparently it was in some obscure place we've never heard of before.

The question is...why keep it on the down low? Was that on purpose or did the marketing team fall asleep at the wheel?

Just curious,
L

vote NO on Prop 98 next tues 6/3

Vote NO on Prop 98 this coming Tuesday!

It to get rid of Rent Control in the state of California and especially in Los Angeles! V ote on Tuesday to defect this mean act! I know for sure that my landlord will raise the rent and i would have to move out !

http://www.noprop98.org/go/why-vote-no-on-98-and-yes-on-99/

Prop 98 hurts renters, homeowners, & the environment.
Proposition 98 is a deceptive measure that a group of wealthy landlords placed on California's June 3, 2008 ballot. These landlords want you to believe the measure is only about ‘eminent domain', but Prop. 98 is full of hidden provisions that would hurt Californians. A broad coalition of groups including AARP, League of Women Voters of California, California Professional Firefighters, California Teachers Association, National Wildlife Federation, and hundreds of other organizations who don't normally agree on the issues - all OPPOSE Prop. 98.
Prop. 98 attacks renters by eliminating renter protections and rent control.
Prop. 98 guts important environmental protections like laws we need to combat global warming, and protect our land, air, water and coasts.
Prop. 98 will hurt our students by making it more difficult to relieve classroom overcrowding.
Prop. 98 threatens our water supply by hindering long-range planning.
Prop. 98 threatens California's businesses.
Prop. 98 threatens California's public safety by making harder for law enforcement to address public safety issues.
Prop. 98 hurts mobile home owners in many of California's mobile home parks.
Why You Should Support Prop. 99 - The Homeowners Protection Act

Proposition 99 is the straightforward solution we need to protect against eminent domain abuse. Prop. 99 prohibits government from using eminent domain to take a home to transfer to a private developer. Unlike the landlords’ Prop. 98, Prop. 99 is eminent domain reform with NO HIDDEN AGENDAS.

The Venice Carnevale is a free street festival that features music and arts of Venice, California, inspired by the masquerade festival of Venice Italy. The event's in its sixth year, and will be held this year at the historic Beyond Baroque building on Saturday June 7th, from noon to midnight.

Every year the Carnevale seeks to highlight some of venice's local talent, as well as bringing in talent from around LA. We have saved some time slots for experienced Venice based DJs who would like to play at this year's event.

Interested DJs, please contact FatFinger for info on how to submit at: info@projectalma.org

My neighbor recently was mugged on this bike coming back from eating on strand. He was hit on the back of the head and beaten and is now in the hospital on oxygen with 3 cracked ribs.

His parent tell us there have been 9 other attacks recently. So be really careful as always, but travel with someone at night!!!!

**** NOVA EXPRESS CAFE IN LOS ANGELES IS CLOSING ****

The Nova Express Cafe has existed to make the claim that a unique artistic cafe is an important part of the cultural ecology of the modern urban landscape. Essentially, Nova Express Cafe is an art project designed to explore the parameters of how a kind of art, based on the importance of community and generally motivated by an idea of fun, can function in society. However, The Nova Express Cafe has existed outside the normal channels of either capital investment or art world patronage and now faces severe economic difficulties. The cafe will be closing Wednesday, March 5. The last fifteen years have been a great romantic adventure! Thanks and goodbye!

-Nova Express

THERE WILL BE TONS OF PEOPLE THERE ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT. THEY WILL BE OPEN VERY VERY LATE FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND.

Anyone notice Big Lots & CVS on Rose & Lincoln are vacant? Wonder why?

Anyone else notice that the Big Lots and CVS stores are vacated here?

I just heard that we are getting a new store - not sure when.

That’s because Whole Foods is moving in. CVS moved to the smaller store that used to be a sport shoe outlet.

Does anyone know when this is scheduled?

Wild Wild West Side true crime tour 2/16

For the first time, the true crime archeologists of Esotouric and 1947project have set their sights on points west of Robertson, and the results are truly astonishing. In this new tour spotlighting some of the weirdest, most horrific and downright unbelievable crimes of historic West Los Angeles, you’ll thrill and shudder to tales of teenage girl gangs, tortured tots, wicked wives, evil spirits, cults, creeps and assorted maniacs on a tour so wild, we had to say it twice. Seats are $55/each (15% off for KCRW members) from http://www.esotouric.com

Marc Emery is called the 'Prince of Pot' and claims to have sold more marijuana seeds than anyone in the world. To date, no one has disputed that claim. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, he is the founder of Cannabis Culture magazien, and considered by the U.S. government to be the biggest drug kingpin in history.

Just days before embarking on his 16-city 'Farewell Tour Across Canada' (and a few short weeks before entering prision for a 10-year stay), Marc was nice enough to sit down and take Time 4 Hemp.

Holidays always come with stress. Getting the gifts and rapping them, cleaning the house and decorating, not to mention all the baking that comes with the comapany! Take some time for yourself this Holiday season to relax and enjoy the bounty of all your hard work. I specialize in aromatherapy, swedish massage, light touch/ lymphatic massage, carpal tunnel release and reflexology, deep tissue, and acupressure. I have an incall space in Culver City off of Centinela. I am also willing to make outcalls anywhere from San Clemente to Valencia. My prices run from $80.00 to $250.00 depending on time and location. I also have gift certificates available for Holidays and Birthdays. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Peace and Blessings,
Tessa Severin

Ed Rosenthal - a founder of High Times Magazine - takes Time 4 Hemp!

Would you please help get the word out about 'Time 4 Hemp' - the new Potcast series that's free to download from http://www.Time4Hemp.com

I've worked hard to put together some great podcasts designed to feed brains the truth about Marijuana and its’ many uses for paper, fiber, fuel, and medications. What's more - the thing that makes these shows so great are the guests!

There are 3 PotCast's being offered – free – at http://www.Time4Hemp.com and all can be subscribed to through iTunes should you like. EACH SEGMENT HAS LOTS OF GREAT MUSIC INCLUDED!

You'll also find nearly 100 great songs and more than 80 interesting videos you can freely download from the site.

The first PotCast series, 'Time 4 Hemp - TODAY' features segments that were recorded in 2007 and are offered in audio format only.

Currently featured is Ed Rosenthal - (one of the founders of High Times Magazine). Ed is recognized worldwide as an authority on marijuana. In his thirty-plus years as a cannabis expert, he has written or edited more than two dozen books about marijuana cultivation and social policy, which cumulatively have sold over one million copies. He is a member of the International Cannabinoid Research Society and the Garden Writers Association of America. He has also served as an expert witness on marijuana cultivation in State and Federal trials.

If you have time, check out some of the past interviews released in this series:

There aren't many outlets for talented musicians to be heard who sing about how wonderful marijuana is - Time 4 Hemp is trying to change that.

This week, Neal Smith (of Indiana NORML) takes Time 4 Hemp to discuss a variety of marijuana-related-topics including how to pass a urine test. Music featured in this free download is from the CD entitled: 1967 - written and recorded by; Mellow The Band.

California legislature passed a law which redefines the legal bacterial levels in raw milk, setting them at levels which are unnatural to unnpasturized milk. This will technically make raw milk illegal. If you care about having healthy food available you should make your voice heard, there will be an injunction filed to attempt to stop this law from going into place. you can support it at - saverawmilk.org

Free Underworld/Paul Oakenfold tickets

We have two extra tickets for Underworld/Paul Oakenfold at the Hollywood Bowl this Sunday night and we are looking for two fun, smart, and charismatic Venice area neighbors to join us for the festivities. The concert is part of the KCRW series and should be solid - and we're going to meet some other friends over there early for drinks on the lawn.

Since our previous partners in crime are now unable to attend, we thought it would be a good opportunity to meet some new chill and like-minded people in the Venice area. We are two younger professionals (m/f) who are long time Venice residents still recovering from BM.

We thought we would all carpool up to the show.

http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tix/performance_detail.cfm?id=3336

Drop us a line to let us know a little about yourselves and maybe a picture (we just want to make sure we are not sitting next to two crack addicts for the whole evening).

Have a great weekend.

Hi, is it possible to contact the actual playa lost and found (the trailer behind center camp) to see if a lost item has turned up? I seem to recall that there is an email address or something for this, but I can't find it anywhere...
I've checked the e-playa boards already...

Thanks!

Volunteer Tutors needed!

The Mildred Cursh Foundation is in need of volunteer tutors.
We start Tuesday, October 9th and we tutor middle school children, as well as grade school students.
These children are considered "at-risk" because they are children of incarcerated parents.
We need people with a big heart who are willing to take on this challenge and be a positive role model in these children's lives.
No experience is necessary, just the willingness to help the local Venice community.
Here are the days we need tutors:
Tuesdays 3-6pm
Wednesdays: 3-6pm
Thursdays: 3-6pm
You do not have to be available everyday; we are extremely flexible and work around your schedule.
For more info, visit us at: www.mildredcurshfoundation.com

****Good Guy With Funds Seeking A Room to Rent ASAP****

Im planning to return to LA hopefully on the 31st, give or take a few days. Maybe much sooner if you need that. I left over a year ago to reconnect with family in North Carolina. My visual portfolio and new album are finished plus i have several employment offers so id love a return to the big city. My resume is included below and i have a diverse set of skills, all of which i invest time in developing.
Im serious about this even selling my burning man ticket(boohoo) to make sure im focused and thoroughly funded.

Personally, i love to eat healthy/live healthy. I dont smoke, drink, or watch TV & Dont judge anyone who does either. My personal enjoyment comes from nature spots like the beach & the canyons, open mics, and community service events.
I'm a 25yr old male and have a few friends out in LA already.
Covering the rent will be no problem for me and i expect to be busy with entreprenurial & regular employment opportunities. I have plenty of character & work references as well.

I sincerly hope you contact me to organize something. An email would be better since my phone is being repaired.
Thanks for your time

My Thoughts on The Homeless

Hello all, It's been a while, but i'm back, and i hope i find everyone well. As most of you Know, me and my wife have been going through our own homeless situation. We have our "housing Choice", voucher, and i think we may even be close to finding a place, but things are still hard, and we are not out of the dark yet. You know there are alot of organizations out here who profess to have the needs of the poor and homeless at the forefront, but when you deal with them you get not respect. They either want to label you an Addict or a Convict, and if you fit neither, they call you a liar to your face. I have NEVER done any drugs, i'm not a gang member, nor have i ever sold any drugs, my wife is the same. WE ARE A NORMAL FAMILY, AND THAT SHOULD SHOW PEOPLE, THAT THE HOMELESS HAVE MANY FACES BUT ALOT OF PEOPLE DON'T SEE THAT. Being poor or homeless is being invisible, and even those who claim to be helping you don't want to actually hear you. Your supposed to shut up accept their aid, and be grateful. They claim to know what we need, when they don't know SHIT. The Gentrification of this city grows by the day, that means homelessness grows by the day. For every 3,000 dollar a month loft you see popping up in your neighborhood, that's about a hundred more poor made instantly homeless. The forcing them into high risk areas lowers the quality of life, where you have to worry about your own survival, as well as that of your family. All the perks of living in good areas are lost in the high risk zones, and the education levels in these area's suffer as a result. Money rules the day, and if you live in a community that has noe what do you think your gonna get? There are some who would disagree with me on this, but i ask them everytime, Where did you grow Up?, and the answer usually is far from those type of areas. I was born in Chicago, Illinois, ant Cook County Medical Center(a County Hospital) With Heroine in my veins from my Junky birth mother, and promptly put up for adoption. I was raised i illinos in a good family, but i still spent a great deal of time in the inner city, So i know al about the ghetto, and the strain it puts on your spirit and your emotions. I have a friend still in the killing fields up there and he is so focused on keeping hmself and his brother alive, that the thoguht of leaving is impossible to him. The live with different peoiple every month, and you know how many folks nation wide are living like that? In New Orleans, where i helped with the resuce effort, pulling people and bodies out of submerged homes, i saw the the devestaion that that did to the poor communties of New Orleans. The developers moved in quickly, and turned it in to disneyland for the rich, and now i know alot of families personally, who cannot return, because it is now too expensive. My point in saying all this, is that we have people who know nothing about suffering attempting to help those who's lives are ALL ABOUT SUFFEREING!!!! If you have no respect for the poor or the homeless find a new line of work! I see the people who represent these organizations disrespecting people on a daily basis, not giving a fuck what you think, assuming that because you are poor or homeless, that you are stupid, and you deserve your fate. There are a few who's hearts are in the job, but not enough to make a difference. Remeber the primary organizing purpose of any business Profit of Not Profit is PROFIT!, once you understand that, then you know where you stand, and what you have to do to not only surve, but to get over. These organizations would not exist if there was no money in Suffering, putting a bandaid on the bullet wound so to speak. I can take you to the parking garage of(insert an organizatio), and you'll see mercades, bmw's, acura, etc. The DIrector of a Certain oranization my family deals with Drives an Astin Martin, and owns 2 bentleys, so believe me i know what time it is. I am grateful that me and my family are not sleeping on the streets, but i will not turn into a house nigga for these people either, i'm not your poster child. Me and my family with a little help, we'll be fine, i'm certain of that, but as far as the poor and the homeless. my eyes are wide open, and have been for quite some time, and i'll stand up and speak for theose who think they cannot. My situation may be solved soon, but i'll always from this point on point out those who exploit, disrespect or lie on my peers, i owe them that much if not more. My peers have a friend for life, and if you are not a friend to the poor and the homeless, you have an Enemy in Me. You get what you Give in life, remeber that everytime you think about doing somebody wrong .

On August 1st around 10:30am some dirtbag entered my gated-apartment complex here in Venice and stole my bicycle. My roommate chased the guy as he rode my bike away towards Abbott Kinney. The bike is a metallic sea-foam green color. It has a bell with a broken spring, so to work the bell you have to pull the switch up and down. There are lights on the valve stems (screw on to the valve stem) which are a dead give away, if I see any bike that vaguely resembles my bike with lights on the valve stems I will be calling the police. Also there is a carrier on the bike that is an off-white color. If anyone sees this bike please let me know ASAP.

The Truth

I know this is old news, but it bothers me so i must speak on it. There's alot of Dickheads in this world who think they understand us "Po Folks", and you know how Celebs and there associates do the charity thing?, well in know you all have heard about madonna, and the adoption scandal going on, and her putting money into this little African village, or about the many Celebs who are sending aid to africa, pouringh out lots of cash, and at the same time, getting lots of press. Normally, i would applaud them in their efforts, but the whole thing, just stinks all to hell to me. First i think it is a publicity thing of course, but second and most importantly, We have alot of people here in the US who are suffering, no Jobs, Homelessness, Aids HIV, The Hurricane, and a host of other home-grown issues. Why the hell would you go thousands of miles away to do charity work, When you might have folks sleeping under the freeway bridge right around the corner from you , or you pass Homeless folks on the street everyday, on your way to the studio, or press conference or whatever. That is the biggest load of crap i've seen in a long time, but i think i might know why. See it's easy to detach yourself from some african kid you send money to, or to feel bad on a journey to a war torn village there, but at the end of the day, you can go back home to your cushy lives, and multi million dollar jobs. The fact that you Have the same shit under your noses (Especially in L.A.) Right here. But that is where the selfishness and denial come in. If you are poor or Homeless, you simply do not exist, people don't see you, and act like there is no such thing as gentrification. This is my messege to you people out there with the power to make a difference in your own city, your own country, but choose to aid others thousands of miles away. Make sure your own house is in order before you even attempt to clean somebody elses. The USA has had this problem for years, and they never learn. Don't get me wrong, i feel for the folks in africa, and the suffering that goes on there, but with all due respect, we have kids here dying in the streets, Families Sleeping on those same streets, child molesters, people who can't feed their families, and shitty schools, as well as piss poor jobs. Act like you Give a damn about your own back yard, then carry the banner to other countries, Damn! People think homelessness is a crime here, and goes hand in hand with stupidity. Nothing could be further from the truth. Don't every let somebody tell you you ,"Can't. There is nothing in this world you can't do, but it is up to YOU to want it. Profiting off the suffering of the poor and homeless is big business in this country, i don't give a fuck what anybody says about that, you can look at it and see it, and untril folks stop using these people for their own gain, the cycle will continue

Need Housing Help for Family!!

Hello again everyone. Everything is going steady right now, still looking for housing for my family, and i think we're gonna be ok. We found out the True nature of our section 8 voucher, and i cleared alot of confusion up, so now i know truly where i can live and can't live right now. One of my ares of intrest is West Hollywood., it is on our list on places we can live, so i am looking for a property owner, who will take our voucher, and work with us. we are looking in other areas, but West Hollywood is a focus, because it would put my 2 year old son still in he area to be eligible for his occupational therapy. This thereapy is important to him, and i don't want to switch him to another system while he is making progress. West hollywood is still in the realm of the Regional Center, who finances his Care. My question is this, If anyone out there knows a property owner in West Hollywood, who would be willing to work with us one a 1 or 2 bedroom please let me know, our voucher expires in september, so our time is running short. Thank you all for your time. You can reach me at 323-440-7611 anytime please.

What's Up everybody, i hope the weekend was good for you all, for me it was suprisingly peaceful, But monday is here and with it, comes the BS. Our ,"Locator", for our organization is steadily trying to push us south, but you know What?, i been finding other things in other directions, and frankly i'm getting tired of being treated like a jackass that didn't graduate 3rd grade, these people are pissing me off, but my wife has a lease on me right now, so i'm not gonna go off like i want to. Like i said before what is the problem with wanting to live safely with your family, really, what is the fucking problem with that?!?!, it's not like i want a condo with the bach for a back yard Damn!!! But my resolve is still the same, we will get to a safe area even if they want us to or not. It's ok for us to live in a warzone, but they just don't want us in their neighborhoods. LA county section 8 office gave me a list of everything they cover, i take this same list to Beyond Shelter (keep in mind it comes from the county!!!), and they tell me it's incorrect. Why not just tell us we don't have a choice and shut the fuck up and go to South Central like we told you to?, instead of maintaining this facade of having one. The more i'm told no, the more it makes me try, because i know Payola when i see it. I'm not gonna just bow down and do it their way. We've been through too much Bullshit, to let somebody stop us not, and believe me i'm tired of the drama, the lying, bait and switching, and the disrespect I had a death in the family recently, my brother is fighting forhis livelyhood, my family at home is in ruins, and on top of all that, me and my wife are going through this shit here, plus running out of food. Can't you see?, i'm tired man, i just wanna breath, but they won't let us. I know our lives don't mean shit to them, or too many others who have no respect for the homeless situation in this city, and others. They thrive off this shit, homelessness IS big business if you don't think somebodys turning a profit off all this suffering, your crazy! But i know what time it is and i WILL NOT BE SILENCED!!!!, because there are a thousand other families like mine who have, and accept their fate, thinking it cannot be changed, but i can, trust me. I know what time it is and for you folks that don't?, you better wake up!!

We've traveled between 4 different cities in four different states, and have experienced alot of Negativity, But i think things may be on the up swing. We'll have housing soon (i hope), and we are not sleeping out on the streets literally any more(and we have, but more on that later). And yes I am Currently homeless, as is my family, and how and why we ended up that way i will share with you all over time. I have to thank KengjiKat for looking out for us, because the ride is about to get alot rougher soon i believe, but we are staying as positive as possible, and i say stay positive to all the others out there going through the same Fire that we are now. The rest of the world may think you invisible, but i see you all, as i hope you see me. The homeless are the living dead of the city streets, people walk by you, or over you without giving a fuck about you or your life. But i think with a little effort ,they will see even The Dead can speak. We are in need of many things, but have little resources, but we are trying to pull things together. We got a Section 8 county voucher, but still looking for somebody on the Westside to rent to us, so if any one out there knows of any, Please by all means let me know.

Beyond Shelter Truths

Hello again everybody, i'd like to once again thank kenji and the rest of you, to welcoming me and my family into your community, With that said, i can move on to other things. I'm sure most of you are familiar with the story Kenji told about the Family with the 9 month old at Beyond Shelter, well me and my wife are the other family from beyond shelter. In order for you to understand our situation, i have to explain the nature of the,"program" that we are in. We reside in an apartment complex that Beyond shelter has set aside for it's Transitional Living program. This program puts you in an apartment for 3 to six months or more, until you can get perminent housing, wether that be by way of section 8, or through other means. The other part of the program is the locating of,"Affordable housing and or Section 8 properties", that the clients can move into. Section 8 gives you a list of areas where you can seek housing, for example, Ingelwood, compton, east La, etc. And the Locater at Beyond Shelter's job is to sit down with you to help you locate a home, in Whatever area your family is seeking to do so. This party of the program is where Beyond Shelter is Dropping the ball wether it be on purpose or otherwise. See the problem is, is that even though they let you think you have a choice in where you live, you really don't. All clients are being herded into South central into the arms of,"FAITHFULL Contributors.". Even though they will never admit this, i see what's going on, as do several other people. And if you voice an opinion about this situation, you may find your self thrown out, while at the same time a cover story is being formulated to both pretect beyond shelter, and to dirty your name at the same time. This is what my family is facing. I offered aid to the family with the nine month old, and this is known to them now, so i don't know how much time we have left. Our voucher expires in September, one of our children has special needsm(occupation thereapy amoungst other things), so I am feeling the pressure here, but i do not regret helping my friend at all, i believe he would do the same for us if the shoe where on the other foot. The bottom line is that we need to find another situation, even if it is another transitional, to get out of this current situation. I don't want to get my family caught up in the relationships beyond shelter has with it's Contributors, They want compesation for their donations, and yes i know what i'm saying sounds wrong, but the bottom line in this all is Money, believe that. All i want is my family to be in an area where we don't have to worry about the schools the violence and all the other things that come with being a number out there with being homeless. They think you should be grateful your getting shelter at all and shut the fuck up, even if that shelter is in the pits of Hades. We came here with a little peice of nothing, and we are fighting hard to come up out of this darkness, and i feel like my family deserves to feel safe, and to feel free. I'm not asking for a condo on the damn beach, just some saftey, and peice of mind, so we can finally breath, is that too much to ask for?, if so then call me greedy. Our needs right now are basic, you know, Diapers, Food, etc. We'll need furnature in the future when we find a home, but not right now. But the housing is Vitally important right now, and i thank everyone reading this for taking the time to do so, i have a tendency to ramble, so bare with me. I hope you all are safe out there, and remember, you see another in need, do whayt you can even if it's just to lend an ear, you'd be suprised how much of a difference that makes. It's me today, tomorrow, it could be anyone.......

Two chances to say "Goodbye/Bon Voyage..."

Yep,

You read that right--"Goodbye/Bon Voyage."

This coming week will contain a HUGE milestone for me--I'm leaving LA! Not only am I leaving Los Angeles (I know that's a big deal in and of itself) I'm leaving the COUNTRY! Unlike previous trips where I was gone for a number of weeks, the next time I return to Los Angeles I will be a *visiting EX-PATRIOT* of the United States of America! A long-time desire of mine has finally manifested into reality--I'm gonna be living in Europe!

In honor of that, I'll be playing TWO farewell gigs! The first will be at my residency for the last 7 years--Something Else! Monday June 25 @ The Brig (1515 Abbot Kinney Bl. Venice 90291 (310) 399-7537 thebrig.com ) One of my former partners, Chaka, has spoken to the owner so he and ToneArm will be taking the reins after my departure (SO GO SUPPORT THEM!!)

The 2nd gig will be Wednesday June 27 (the night before I take off) at my friends' Adam (Dj Adlove) & Scott's night @ The Hideout (112 W. Channel Road Santa Monica, CA 90402 (310) 429-1851 www.santamonicahideout.com/ ) There's actually room to dance, and I'm expecting some of you to test that theory... ;)

Both gigs are at bars, so it's strictly 21+ w/ID, 9pm-2am and no cover (so DRINK UP!!)

I know some of you won't be able to make either of these--I love you anyway. If you have a minute, send me a "message of love" (as the pretenders would say) and I'll carry it in my heart to my new home in Sitges, Catalunya, Spain. Btw, I'll be Dj'ing out there, so if you're gonna be in the Barcelona area hit a bruh up, k?

If I've forgotten anything important...
...lemme know!
Petition to Ban Chain Stores in Venice

in the past six months, I've watched Coffee Bean, Quizno's Subs and Campos Tacos sprout like corporate weeds around the Windward & Pacific intersection near my apartment building. My friend on Abbott Kinney (who has watched her neighborhood go from dodgy to upscale over the past 10 years) has seen the arrival of the first chain store (Pinkberry's) to the A.K. area as well.

I understand that change is inevitable and along with change comes good things and bad - this happens to be one of those things that make the Venetian in me very very sad. a blog I read recently articulated my feelings on the matter quite well:

"With each coming week, it seems like the edginess that I so cherished and loved is giving way to mainstream culture – a haven for yuppies and those with bank accounts that can afford the unrealistic rents. Older business are slowly being priced out by tripling rents, newer, slicker, more generic places moving in. Even though this is true in most other places, like San Francisco and Santa Cruz, it seems particularly distressing that this change is happening in Venice, since traditionally Venice has signified everything that is revolutionary, bohemian and unconventional about American counter-culture.

The voices of rebellion are quickly being replaced by those of the complacent – people who don’t care about much more than their tax-breaks and home appreciation costs; people who don’t give to the community, but instead move in, take what they can get, drive up prices and then leave within a couple of years.

I hope that Venice doesn’t entirely become the bastion of the rich and famous. It is the most popular tourist attraction in So Cal, after all (even more popular than Disneyland, apparently). Unfortunately, the developers don’t realize that part of the attraction is the funky craziness, and the last thing we need in LA is yet another sterile amusement park-type place with a bunch of big box stores."

source: geckogrrl.wordpress.com/2007/0...action/

Even on this tribe, I know there are different schools of thought on what is considered "progress" in Venice and what is considered a watering down of what we feel Venice stands for

- but if you feel the same way about chain stores in Venice and how they affect the unique character of our home, please visit this site to sign the petition to ban chain stores in Venice and spread the word to your friends. You don't have to be from Venice to sign the petition (I believe.) I talked to the ladies that are behind this cause and they are looking for anyone with a background in the legal, accounting, research, architectural fields to lend them a hand in presenting a solid case to City Councilman Bill Rosendahl.

I loved living there for years. It Still breaks my heart that they kicked us all out in the name of making more money. It was a great community with young and old and people of all backgrounds living side by side. Venice is losing all its flavor far too quickly.

Local Beaches Closed Due to Sewage Spill

just in case you don't check regular news... fyi...

Local Beaches Closed Due to Sewage Spill
June 15, 2007, 9:47 AM PDT

2,400-gallon sewage spill closes Dockweiler, Venice beaches Portions of two Southern California beaches remain closed through tomorrow because of a 24-hundred gallon sewage spill.

Signs are posted to stay out of the water at Dockweiler and Venice. Los Angeles County health officials say the spill was caused yesterday by overflow of a grease-clogged, eight-inch sewer pipe.

Quarter-mile stretches north and south of Ballona Creek are affected by the closure.

The clogged sewer line (near Lincoln and Jefferson boulevards) sent sewage late Wednesday into tributaries connecting to Ballona Creek and out to sea.

This is the second spill to foul the same beaches in recent weeks. On May 24th, health officials posted signs in the area after 67-hundred gallons of sewage flowed into the sea.

Greetings,

At Gaia Festival this year, we are offering a screening of the documentary film, "Signs Out of Time," about the life and work of visionary archaeologist Marija Gimbutas on May 26, 2007 starting at 9:15pm.

Marija Gimbutas changed the way the world saw Neolithic cultures of Old Europe and helped us gain a new vision of how life can be - peaceful, cooperative and Earth-centered.

Marija’s controversial interpretations of the thousands of Goddess figurines she unearthed during her archaeological excavations gained her both staunch supporters and adversaries.

“Signs Out of Time” was produced by Donna Read and Starhawk, without any grants, funded by individuals who believed in the importance of Marija’s work.

More than ever before, Marija’s work needs to be brought to the public’s attention. Now, with the Earth in an ecological crisis of dire proportions, humankind must step up to care for Her, for Gaia, to ensure sustainable life on this planet for future generations. Order your own copy of this inspiring documentary on the Belili Productions website (http://www.belili.org/order.html).

For more information about Gaia Festival, please email Kris Oster (kris@gaiafestival.com) and check out our website with the full schedule and descriptions of workshops and events: www.gaiafestival.com.

Here's a site -- wef.ucdavis.edu -- 37 years of wholesome fun that will be experienced by 30,000 beautiful beings on the UC Davis campus. I'm friends with someone in Topanga that's going, but won't have space w his gf and many instruments. Many of you may know or have seen him from VAMU, creativity, Venice, Rawvolution, etc. Anybody who's been to the first three has surely seen me (or my spirit if my physical presence was lacking) dancing up a synchronized storm. My love for mother nature led me to not drive a few years ago, but I would love to splurge on a tank or two maybe of that nasty gas. I can meet up anywhere metro goes. I'm very much of a fun-loving, thoughtful of all person. I've been called maestro, guru, the king of one-liners, and said to be on another level. The former two by a singer of a band breaking through that's played all major networks and coachella. I've been invited onto a lot of stages by musicians or their friends, fans, managers. Anyway...

Love, light, luck, and laughs,

Eagle-I -- gotta update on tribe some time -- pls call any time after 7:45 today
323 540 7738 (pls leave a msg if turned off)
btw I have blond hair, a red beard, and round glasses for those who may have seen me. I could send a pic from an e- (dunno how to post it on tribe yet)

It is that time of year again....

The traffic cops are in full force on and around Lincoln Blvd. Driving home from the Ralph's last night I saw at least 5 cops on bikes pulling people over for various infractions all within a few blocks of each other. One eyed me as I left the parking lot and then looked down at my license plate but of course there wasn't any reason to stop me so he didn't. Still they do this at least once a year and when they are in full force they will pull you over for anything so beware!!

Meanwhile it took me two weeks of calling them almost every day to get them to do something about the crack addict who parked his non operational car in front of my house and smoked crack and left trash on my lawn and did deals in broad daylight! Priorities eh?

Any Westside Alt. Alum? Does anyone care about the politics of Venice? What about yuppy 3-storey "architectural" stucco boxes? Anyone worried about police harassment? Any boardwalk artisans? Am I in the right Tribe? Any writers out there - judging by the crowds at the coffee shop in the middle of any weekday, I think there are some alternative earners out there. What do you notice about Venice? Let's hear some witty observations... I'm far away and need a fix of my hometown street life. Give it to me!!!
